On 26 October, we commemorate Blessed M\u00e1ria Magdolna B\u00f3di, the young martyr of the Archdiocese of Veszpr\u00e9m. Through her life, faith, purity and love for others, she bore witness to Christ and remained faithful to Him even in the face of death. Her liturgical memorial marks the anniversary of the day in 1941 when she consecrated her life to God through a private vow of chastity in Balatonf\u0171zf\u0151.<\/strong><\/p>\n

M\u00e1ria Magdolna B\u00f3di was born on 8 August 1921 in Szigliget, into a family living in modest and difficult circumstances. Her childhood was marked by hardship and frequent moves, but the religious upbringing she received from her mother provided a lasting foundation for her life.<\/p>\n

From an early age, she stood out for her lively intelligence, cheerful personality and concern for others. During her school years in K\u00f6vesk\u00e1l, her faith, commitment to community life and willingness to help those in need became increasingly important to her.<\/p>\n

She lived her faith not only through prayer but also through everyday acts of kindness. She enjoyed working with children, visiting the sick and elderly, and finding ways to support those around her.<\/p>\n

A Life Dedicated to Christ<\/h2>\n

From a young age, Magdi felt a deep desire to dedicate her life entirely to God. Although family circumstances prevented her from entering religious life, her determination remained unchanged.<\/p>\n

On 26 October 1941, the Feast of Christ the King, she made a private vow of chastity in the Sacred Heart of Jesus Church in Balatonf\u0171zf\u0151.<\/strong> This date would later become her liturgical memorial.<\/p>\n

Her vow did not mean withdrawing from the world. On the contrary, it inspired her to serve others with even greater dedication and to bear witness to Christ’s love through her daily life.<\/p>\n

From 1939, she worked at the Nitrok\u00e9mia factory in Balatonf\u0171zf\u0151. Although she initially faced difficulties because of her open commitment to her faith, her integrity and kindness gradually earned the respect of her colleagues.<\/p>\n

She became actively involved in the Catholic Working Girls’ Association, organised communities and devoted particular attention to helping young women find spiritual and moral support.<\/p>\n

Faithful to the Very End<\/h2>\n

During the final months of the Second World War, the front reached the Lake Balaton region. Amid uncertainty and fear, Magdi continued to help those around her.<\/p>\n

On 23 March 1945, near Lit\u00e9r, she defended her chastity against the violent advances of a Soviet soldier. When she resisted, the soldier shot her several times.<\/p>\n

According to tradition, her final words were:<\/p>\n

\u201cMy Lord, my King! Take me to Yourself!\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

She was only twenty-three years old when she gave her life in fidelity to Christ.<\/p>\n

Magdi’s martyrdom is more than the memory of a tragic historical event. Her life bears witness to the enduring power of faith, human dignity, love and selflessness, even in the most difficult circumstances.<\/p>\n

Her Example Continues to Inspire Us<\/h2>\n

On 6 September 2025, M\u00e1ria Magdolna B\u00f3di was beatified in Veszpr\u00e9m.<\/strong> This historic celebration was a milestone in the life of the Archdiocese of Veszpr\u00e9m and opened a new chapter in sharing her example with people throughout the world.<\/p>\n

Her liturgical memorial is celebrated on 26 October, the anniversary of her vow of chastity.<\/p>\n

Today, as we give thanks for her life and martyrdom, we do more than look back on the past. Magdi’s example continues to speak to us in the present. She encourages us to remain faithful to our beliefs, to treat one another with love, and to follow Christ through the small decisions of everyday life.<\/p>\n

On Monday, 26 October, at 6:00 p.m., the Archdiocese of Veszpr\u00e9m will celebrate the liturgical memorial of Blessed M\u00e1ria Magdolna B\u00f3di with Holy Mass at St Michael’s Cathedral in Veszpr\u00e9m.<\/strong> All the faithful and everyone wishing to join in prayer and thanksgiving are warmly invited.<\/p>\n
